Dadant US Western Red Cedar bijenkast
Dadant US Western Red Cedar bijenkast
Dear beekeepers,
Sorry for asking in English but my Dutch skills are rather bad.
I'm living in Northern Germany (Oldenburg) and trying to find a supplier where I can buy Dadant US beehives made from Western Red Cedar wood. It seems that the usage of this wood for this application is pretty unknown in Germany so there are no dealers / producers who use this material for their beehives.
Using google I did find several dealers in the US, GB, France AND the Netherlands who sell beehives made from Western Red Cedar. Since the Dutch border is just 100 km away I'm thinking of buying one there. BUT: I wasn't able to find a Dutch dealer who sells Dadant US beehives (like this one: http://www.holtermann-shop.de/index.php ... beute.html), I only could find "Spaarkast" and "Simplexkast" beehives (to be honest, I never heard of this types before) made from Western Red Cedar.
Does anybody here know a Dutch dealer, who sells Dadant US beehives made of Western Red Cedar wood?
Dank je wel,
Simon

Hi Simon,
I've looked around but couldn't find any red cedar Dadant US bee hives. does the hive have to be made of red cedar? because the ones sold here are made of pine, they are a bit heavier than red cedar but also have a long life span. Otherwise if it has to be red cedar you would have to make your own hives.
Sorry I couldn't help you more

Re: Dadant US Western Red Cedar bijenkast
Hi Erick,
thanks for your answer and thanks a lot for searching!
I want to use the beehives without any coat of paint (or just some lineseed oil) so pine (Pinus strobus is used quite often in Germany) or spruce (Picea abies) wood wouldn't last very long under the rainy and wet weather conditions we have here. That's maybe one of the reasons, why the Segeberger Beute (made from styrofoam) seems to be the most common beehive in Northern Germany.
This is a nice short article about the benefits of Western Red Cedar beehives with links to UK manufacturers / dealers: http://www.honeybeehive.co.uk/beekeepin ... dar-hives/
Some more information about the three wood types:
Western Red Cedar -> http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-ide ... red-cedar/
Pine -> http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-ide ... hite-pine/
Spruce - > http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-ide ... ay-spruce/
Espacially the "Rot Resistance" and "Average Dried Weight" are pretty interesting, Western Red Cedar is clearly lighter than the other two woods but has a higher rot resistance.
Thanks again,
Simon

Simon I know the benefits of red cedar, but you also can consider Oregon Pine / European Douglas its a little heavier than red cedar but lighter than the pine used here and it's almost even weather resistant as red cedar.

Dear Simon,
The link given by Hans is the company selling Dadant US hives in red cedar. When you go to this site, you can order the Dadant modifi (actually they mean Dadant modified). This is a Dadant hive equipped with 12 modified Dadant frames.
Kind regards,
Gerard

Thanks for all the help, this seems to be exactly what I was looking for! Now I just need to assure my wife that we need a new beehive for almost 300 Euros
